Community Service. Lutheran West strongly advocates the importance of community service.  The call to have “ Christian outsight” beyond the walls of our homes and school comes directly from Scripture.  In Matthew 25 Jesus reminds us that our response to the hungry, thirsty, homeless, naked, sick and imprisoned among us will be considered as done to Him.  Our Lord’s expectation for helping others is clear and we are consequently, as a community, dedicated to developing the lifelong habit of community service within each of our students.

We believe that positive habit-forming behaviors take time to develop.  Among the many positive habits that we seek to develop at Lutheran West is the commitment to community service.  In placing an emphasis on the importance of community service during the immensely formative high school years, we are hopeful that our students, through their service experiences, will gain a commitment to continuing such activity into adulthood.

Each student is required to complete the number of service hours for his or her grade level by the end of the 4th quarter.  If a student falls short of the required number of service hours he/she will have to redo the full number of service hours for that year plus the number of hours he/she fell short.  No Lutheran West student will be able to receive a Lutheran West diploma and graduate without the required service completed.

The new Service requirements will be phased in starting with the Class of 2011.  Parents will be notified quarterly of their student’s progress.
