LOUDENVILLE --
The Longhorns traveled out to
Wellington
for their first playoff game against the Loudenville Redbirds. West heard that Loudenville was good, but did not know that they were actually sixth in the state. West had the number 12 seed in the tournament where as Loudenville was ranked number 1. The Longhorns knew that they had a chance if they played their game because Loudenville would be probably being a bit over-confident coming into this game. Coach
Josh Campbell
set his line-up as, freshman Lindsay Thomas, senior Alyssa Chuhran, senior Sarah Gettinger, Sophomore Stephanie Zanotti and junior Meghan O'Hara.
As the game started, the Longhorns already had the Redbirds scared. West was able to get the first bucket which allowed them to take the early lead. Loudenville couldn't run with West, which caused them to get frustrated. Due to Loudenville's frustration, the Longhorns were able to take advantage of their mistakes which left the game extremely close. By the end of the first half, the Longhorns were only down by 13, which was a lot less then what everyone was expecting.
The second half started to be a different story. As the Longhorns started to fall apart in the third quarter, they were quickly able to get back together. The Longhorns were out running Loudenville, and the Redbirds were starting to make many careless mistakes which allowed the Longhorns to get many easy layups. The Longhorns gave it their all throughout the entire game and they surprised many people with how they held their own. With two minutes left, Coach Campbell took out the only seniors, Chuhran and Gettinger, and allowed freshman Ari Tomasula and sophomore Sam Castro to get some playing time. Both girls started crying because they just played in their last high school basketball game. The game ended with West only losing by 18 points.
West surprised many fans with their effort and the fact that they never gave up. They left everything they had on the floor and played with heart. Coach Campbell said he couldn't be more proud because all the girls always kept their head up and didn't let the opposing players or their fans get into their heads. The Longhorns season is now over and Loudenville has advanced to the next round playing
Brooklyn
on Saturday.
